The Sixth Seal (Historicist View)
Perhaps we should take a step back for a wider view, and acknowledge the fact that "The Donald's" mere viability highlights some very disturbing trends in our political discourse and indeed, in our society as a whole.
BeLIEve
First off, let's start with the obvious. He's a billionaire. Our whole system is tilted in his favor. Sure, everyone can register to run for President. But for most of us, telling your kid that they could be President one day smacks of sarcasm so thick no blade could cut it. What parents should say is: "When you are old enough you can register to run for President." Everyone can do that. Some kid in South Carolina has registered his cat. Looking at my current choices, I'll take the cat.
It's a similar lie to all the lies we were told. Hard work will get you ahead (HA!), America is the land of opportunity (FOR WHO?!?!), capitalism works in your favor (double, triple HA!), your standard of living will always improve (
Idiocracy
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Idiocracy is happening (for those not familiar, watch the intro scene here). The stupid are reproducing at a truly alarming rate. "Evolution, a process that once favored the most noble traits of man, now started to favor different traits...."
Add in our braindead obsession with instant gratification, our limited attention for only the shortest snippets of information, our constant status update culture, and we've got a recipe for disaster. Have you seen the news in the US lately? Meaningless gibberish. Flip to any of the international news stations that are, thankfully, available in this area over the airwaves and news pieces are reported in depth, always with a discussion of root cause. Flip to NBC, ABC, FOX, CNN, whatever.....all you get is little snippets. No meaning or context. Just what happened. No analysis. No questions. No asking "Why?" Entertainment, misinformation, weather. And they run it every night.
It's dangerous enough to let stupid people make decisions. Now they are misinformed stupid people.
Racism Revival
A while ago, a family member declared that we were in a post-racial society. We live in Maryland, so I was a bit forgiving at the time, figuring that they simply had never been exposed to the existing racial divides that currently define "real 'Murica."
I grew up in a town that for all intensive purposes was still segregated, at least in regard to housing. There were white neighborhoods and black neighborhoods. My secondary school was the original black high school. So yeah, the scars from segregation were still readily apparent where I grew up.
Not only that, but on both sides, it was readily apparent that racism is still alive and well. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's still there. And it will be for a very long time. So, am I surprised that 24% of registered Republicans love Donald for his anti-Latino rant? Absolutely not. What surprises me is that his numbers aren't higher out in the red states.
Culmination of decay
I've been reading a history of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. And let me tell you, the parallels are simply stunning. From the dispersion of military might to all corners of the known world, to the loss of faith in the representatives of the Republic, to the quality of elected leaders, the management of public debt, methods of taxation, we've got it all. It's as if someone picked up the book in 1776 and wanted to see how quickly they could re-enact the whole damn thing.
Faith in public servants is at an all time low, and it is certainly well earned. All of our representatives are in the pockets of dirty money. It's the only way they can get and stay elected. Which is all they care about. They don't care about their constituents. They care about getting a majority of the minority of constituents that still vote to vote for them. So many people are jaded that a vocal, insane minority can set the tone of the whole election, completely reversing the concept of majority rule. Conquered by the barbarians (thus the title of this post).
End Game
Listen. We're already over 7 billion people on this planet. And all of them wanting more. Even the richest, including "The Donald," want more. That idiot wants to be President. If it wasn't that, he'd want 8 more gaudy hotels in wherever. It's human nature. More more more. Gotta store up for bad times. More for me. MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE. I'm no different. I'm just stating the facts.
It's obvious we will burn all the fossil fuels we can get our hands on to feed our insatiable lust for convenience. Things are so bad that climate scientists have just given up and said, well, we might as well just figure out the effects of the worst case scenario. And for you global warming skeptics (yes, Chuck, I'm talking to YOU) - why don't you head outside in the dead of summer, pile every blanket on top of you and tell me it's not getting toasty. Or, for an oddly-timed "Cosby Sweater" analogy, see this link. Greenhouse gases are a planetary insulator, for fuck's sake. The only processes that will reverse climate change are nuclear winter or a huge upsurge in volcanic activity. Trust me, I'm all for humanity pulling it's own plug or for Yellowstone taking a huge shit all over half of the U.S. as the next guy, but don't come to me with your basic lack of an education in physics. And even if you don't believe in the scientific method, you should consider that when the Pope is taking a more progressive stance than your country, it may be time to make a change.
Bottom line: It's fucked. "It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die." Probably not tomorrow, not next year, or the year after. Maybe not in my lifetime. Maybe not even in my kids. But with each passing year it's getting more and more probable. What is it? Who knows? Economic collapse? Global Pandemic? Hot War with Russia? Does it matter?
But buck up, little camper. With the Donald in office, you can be sure of one thing: We will all get what we deserve.
Are you laughing yet?

Happy Birthday / Song of the day
"Let's Hear It For Rock Bottom"
I can stay here for awhile
Antidotes and revelations
Just extend my own exile
Wasting away
The world's right in front of me
Funny you should say
That it's all in my head
Wasting away
We're hitting rock bottom
And going down in flames
Well it's not that bad
With my lack of observation
I can stay in here for days
Could you find my motivation
I can't see it through this haze
Wasting away
The world's right in front of me
Funny you should say
That it's all in my head
Wasting away
We're hitting rock bottom
And going down in flames
Well it's not that bad
Wishing away
The world's right in front of me
Call me anyway
Cause it's all in my head
Wasting away
We're hitting rock bottom
And going down in flames
Well it's not that bad
Wasting all my days
What would Ivan say
Wasting all my days
What would Ivan say
Wasting away
We're hitting rock bottom
Call me anyway
Cause I got two friends
Wasting away
We're going down together
And all in all it's not so bad
All in all it's not so bad
It's hard to know
Where to start and where to go
I will never say these words again

Greece spells out debt 'rescue' deal
It took then that long for the Greeks to come up with taxes on the rich and business?
Not surprising i guess, since in this country they would go to extremes to expand austerity and poverty before even thinking to ask billionaires for another dime.
So, a truly rare kudos to Greece, then. Probably the only time you will ever hear that from me

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
I suppose today was day one. Of what, TBD. But after waking at 0300 last night to give Ryan a bottle and get him back to sleep, I couldn't sleep.
I couldn't shake a feeling that my old self from years ago would take a look at me and yell "unacceptable!" Like Genghis Khan in the Hitchhiker's Guide, only somewhat less temporally removed. I mean, wow, what a string of worthless jobs, stacked one after the other. To say the least, at least as far as job satisfaction goes, the last ten years have been suboptimal. But was it really the job? No. Jobs don't matter. It was more of a feeling, pressure building up over a while now. Little incidents of people being idiots on the road were starting to make me see red. Those hurried little ants, always racing to go nowhere. Completely oblivious to the futility of their own efforts. Most of them with an IQ of a carrot.
I've always hated people. Individuals are OK, even great. There's a small number of individuals that I can spend all the time in the world with and be happy. But when I'm forced to interact with a number of people at once, I would prefer to just disappear into the wall paper. I don't even want to be a fly on the wall. I don't care much what they have to say.
My focus tolerance is very low. Unless it's two people I really like, I start to fade out even in groups of three including me. I suppose it's no wonder that I hate living in the suburbs of DC, crammed in with all these other people, all of them debt slaves chasing shit we don't need. Including me. "Unacceptable!" yells the old me, and I start to listen…..
"What the hell are you doing here?" he asks. I have no answer. "Why are you wasting your life on this stupid shit?" Still, no answer. He's not in the mood to take no for an answer tonight, so the badgering continues for a while, until I finally drift off to sleep….
I wake up in the morning, all motivation to go to work some distant memory. I lay in bed while the house is getting started, Katy and the parents welcoming Ryan to a new day. At long last, drag myself into Ryan's room where Katy is changing him and announce that last night I died, and was born again…..resurrected. To her inquisitive look I explain that I need to find something to do that doesn't make me feel like a piece of shit, or I need to quit and take care of Ryan full time. The latter would negate my need to interact with those parts of humanity I detest. After all, Amazon even delivers groceries now.
To my surprise, Katy says "OK, well see what you can find and then we can have a talk." At that moment Mom comes around and says that it's 60 degrees outside. I say I'm going for a run. It's 0630.
The iPod shuffle plays "Adam's Song" to start off. How fitting. About a quarter mile in comes the crescendo with "Tomorrow holds such better days, days when I can still feel alive, when I can't wait to get outside….."
Thanks to my long hiatus, I feel a bit winded but good. The shuffle seems to know my mood, and makes some great random selections. I turn to University to Sligo and make it to University fairly easily, then head back towards Dennis. On the way, "One Last Thing" by Angels and Airwaves comes on. The first gate is open, and I'm flying back to Dennis. Disregard the turn back home. Work can wait. "Bad Blood" by Bastille comes on. Oh yeah, "All this bad blood here, won't you let it dry?" A good medium pace song to not burn so bright as to burn out. Continue on, and on to the Brunett mile long hill up to the house from Sligo. As I start up it, "Gone" by U2. Perfect. A half mile out, Shinedown comes on - "Have you ever been caught in a sea of despair and the moment of truth is the day you say I'm not scared…."
At the end, I'm beat but overall, a much better use of my time than work. Take my time showering and getting ready for work, and decide to motorcycle to work. Take a new way through windy Seminary Road through Kensington, and it's now my standard route. Fun to drive and no traffic. Great weather.
Get to work and I've missed a meeting with my supervisor. Who cares.
There's a message from upper upper management on my phone. Fun fact, 3-3-7 is the code to skip to the end and delete.
There's a meeting with a Senator and his staff next week. Whooptie fucking doo.
Decide to actually do some work on the lower priority, but more interesting project to which I am assigned. Feels good.
Wrap up, and head out. On the way home, the motorcycle dies on Beach Drive and I pull aside. Display is dead. Call Honda, and they say check the battery leads. Open up the maintenance cover, and sure enough, there hangs the positive lead. The screw is loose, and won't re-thread. Try for a while, but ultimately redneck it and use the maintenance cover screw to dig into the loose rubber material that holds the screw in position on the battery. Drive it in at an angle to get some traction on the screw. It works as a temporary fix to get me home. Reminds me of the trip out west and troubleshooting that old Suburban. On approach to home, reflect that I should probably have been a mechanic.
Overall a good day. Certainly better than portended at 0300. We'll see what tomorrow holds…..

You would think police would be on good behavior after recent scrutiny. Of course, maybe this is their version of good behavior. The guy is paralyzed, after all.
My question is who calls the cops on a 57 year old walking down the street, just because he is glancing at your house? Answer - Alabamans.
Not too surprising for one of our many intolerant and racist states.
One last comment - If you are travelling to the US and don't know the lay of the land, it's probably best to avoid any red state. I'm serious, they may try to kill you.
I try to avoid them, and I'm white. My fear is I will be heard expressing an opinion or asking a simple question and end up shot by some crazed, gun-toting lunatic. For all their rhetoric about freedom, they sure hate freedom of speech and religion out there in the wastelands.
On account of their poor educational systems, they can't quite grasp the concept of freedom being the ability to have different views than the neighbors that look just like you.
